You have probably heard the above mentioned terms being used to describe the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoko; which basically translates to 'Forest Bathing'
This nature based therapeutic practice originated in Japan in the 1990s as a result of the Japanese Government's commissioned study and research; which was headed by Professor Yoshifumi Miyazaki due to Japan facing a national health crisis.
Forest Bathing and Nature Therapy is the mindful, sensual and often deeply spiritual practice of spending time in natural settings; whether that be walking, running, cycling, sitting, meditating, gardening or camping; for the benefits of our health and overall sense of well-being.
Our bodies are still genetically attuned to living in a nature environment. Our ancestors historically lived in harmony with the natural world and we learnt how to survive and respect the land. We learnt to find food, forage, and we migrated with animals to find shelter and water; which ultimately led to us developing settlements, farming and communities.
However this advancement in technology, (beginning with the Industrial Revolution) has come at a cost to our own development as a species; in so much that, our bodies haven’t ”evolved” to cope with the demands of modern, often sedentary life.
How will Forest Bathing make you feel?
With over 30 years of clinical research to evidence the benefits of Forest Bathing as a treatment option. The NHS and Health Commissioners are now encouraging the use of Nature Based programmes for certain immunity-related diseases as well as reducing stress, reversing diabetes, improving heart disease, inflammatory diseases and supporting in the recovery of trauma as well as our mental health and wellbeing.
Research shows that within 15 minutes of being in a natural setting our stress hormone cortisol starts to reduce. What's even more astounding is that recent research has found that spending as little as 2 hours in nature can boost our immune systems for up to a month!
The trees themselves also have a part to play in the symbiotic relationship we share with them.
As well as filling our lungs with oxygen, trees emit chemicals via their leaves called phytoncides, terpines and penine which have been found to have incredible effects on our immune systems by raising our (NK) cells which fight diseases and cancer, lowering our stress hormones, and boosting our energy levels.
So breathing in the aroma of the forests is regarded as being similar to natural aromatherapy.
Even more fascinating is the research of mud; yes good ol’ dirt, and those rotting leaves. Scientists have found that there are tons of beneficial bacteria in soil; namely probiotics, which have an important part to play in the work of our gastrointestinal tracts; as well as showing improvements in longevity, reduced signs of aging and mood enhancements.
Soil is a natural form of anti-depressant. Studies have shown that the probiotics in the soil; actually play a part in decreasing anxiety, and improving cognitive functioning by regulating the mood and fear neurotransmitters in our brains that enhance the miracle growth nerve factors responsible for healthy nerve cell maintenance.
NATURE REALLY IS INCREDIBLE
(and don’t get me started on the marvellous mushrooms and mycelium network!)
So What Happens in a Forest Bathing session?
We begin with an informal chat about you. We will talk about what intentions you have for your session or insight. This first part can take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
You will then be sent different forms to complete including a risk assessment and medical assessment of any concerns we need to be aware of.
This is then followed by the guided Forest Bathing session which can take up to 1 hour 30minutes; where we will agree on a suitable date, time and location.
We will engage all of our senses through different guided meditations, mindful walking, forest bathing activities, discussion, and any integration work from our experience and insight.
In the meditations, you can choose to sit or lie, and connect with the earth directly via grounding, or lay on a waterproof mat. You are fully clothed during the session and will be provided with a blanket for warmth if required.
For those who are open and curious to the shamanic world. At the beginning of the session, I will open a sacred, safe healing space. I will welcome in our guides, healers, nature beings, elementals, ancestors and other beings of light guided to work with us and who are appropriate for the session.
We will then evaluate your session and look at any possible future sessions; and get them booked in our diaries.
Before booking a session with me; you are welcome to consult your general practitioner or specialist first to rule out any underlying issues.
I am trained, accredited and insured to do this work.

The term 'nature deficit disorder' was coined by American author and journalist Richard Louv in his book 'Last Child in the Woods-Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder,'
'Nature-deficit disorder is not a formal diagnosis, but a way to describe the psychological, physical and cognitive costs of human alienation from nature, particularly for children in their vulnerable developing years'. Richard Louv
Children need nature in their lives.
Children's immune systems and their body's ability to develop both physically and psychologically need; open, natural spaces which challenge them and offer them growth and a sense of belonging, community and safety.
We live in a society that is too quick to label, diagnose and medicate children rather than seek to explore other alternative ways of exploring their behaviours, mental health and facilitating an environment that promotes their well-being.
The recent statistics show an incredibly sad reality. That medicating children has become the norm.
In the US; a 2003 study published in the Psychiatric Journal found that prescriptions of antidepressants to pre-school children has increased by 66% with Prozac being given the go ahead since 2001.
These heart-breaking figures show that for the first time in history the prescribing of anti-psychotic and anti-depressant medications have surpassed the prescribing of asthma and anti-biotic medications to children.
Then there's the lack of services and dwindling 'green spaces' being made freely available to children; which is resulting in more and more children spending a majority of their time indoors; and now connected to a world that exists online.
American Clinical Psychologist Craig Brod also termed the phrase 'technostress' explaining that with the introduction of computer technology and our ever increasing reliance on technology, and more recently social media; as a species, we are living in a constant state of stress and moving further away from nature to the point where our children aren't able to access outdoor spaces at all.
However there is an ever growing body of research coming through now; where a growing movement of child therapeutic practitioners; whether they be paediatricians, psychologists, schools, nurseries, psychologists, counsellor and therapists; are all now implementing nature therapy based practice into their therapeutic approaches with children and young people and as a result they are getting outstanding results for children health and well-being.
